The PFIEV program is trained for 5 years, has built on a solid foundation of basic science knowledge (the first 2 years) and specialized knowledge (3 years later).
Phase 1 (first 2 years): general subjects (general knowledge)

Phase 2 (3 years later): specialized and specialized basic subjects.
Normally students who complete the first 3 semesters will enter the Specialization Selection Exam (around March each year). The subjects include Math and statistical probability (factor 3), Physics (factor 2) and Foreign Language (factor 1, French or English). This test aims to guide students who are transferred to Phase 2 to study in 1 of 15 training majors at 1 of the 4 universities under PFIEV in Vietnam (National University of Civil Engineering (NUCE), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), University of Science and Technology – The University of Danang (DUT) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City). Students outside the PFIEV program of 4 PFIEV member universities that have completed at least 3 semesters can take the exam provided that the average of the 3 semesters must be 7.0 / 10 or higher. If eligible and the student does not owe any subjects for the first 4 semesters, he / she may enter the 3rd year of the PFIEV program.
