Seminar on Discrete Element Method (DEM) and its applications in geotechnical works

On June 6, 2023, the Board of Management and Training of Excellent Engineers, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE) organized a seminar on Discrete Element Method (DEM) and its applications in the geotechnical works for PFIEV students.

Overview of the conference

Attending the seminar, on the guest side, there were Prof. Dr. Gael Combe – In charge of the international Master’s Training Program “Hydraulic and Civil Engineering”, Grenoble INP, the partner university of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering within the framework of the PFIEV program; Dr. Vo Thanh Trung – Head of Science, Technology and International Cooperation Department, Danang Architecture University; Dr. Tong Anh Tuan – Head of the Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology, University of Transport and Communications. On the side of HUCE, there were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh – Vice Rector, Head of the Project on the Training Program of Excellent Engineers of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering; Dr. Tong Ngoc Tu – Head of Board of Management and Training of Excellent Engineers; Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien – Faculty of building and industrial construction; Dr. Nguyen Duc Manh – Head of Hydraulic Engineering major PFIEV and PFIEV students.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh – Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering gave the opening speech of the seminar

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh – Vice Rector of the University thanked the Grenoble INP as well as Prof. Dr. Gael Combe for always facilitating and contributing to the cooperation between NUCE and Grenoble INP in recent years. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh highly appreciates this academic seminar and believes that this will be an opportunity for the students to cultivate and improve their professional knowledge, promoting the process of improving the quality of human resources.

Prof. Dr. Gael Combe – Grenoble INP presented a presentation at the seminar

At the seminar, students will hear presentations from lecturers and researchers on finite element method (FEM) and discrete element method (DEM) which are widely applied in the field of geography and granular materials:

– “Discrete element method and applications in geotechnical engineering” presented by Prof. Dr. Gael Combe.

– “Modeling using discrete element method of granular material flow and application in landslides” by Dr. Vo Thanh Trung.

– “FEMxDEM modeling of granular materials” by Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh gave souvenirs to the speakers attending the seminar

This is an academic conference on a method developed to solve discontinuity problems in a continuum environment where the finite element method has certain limitations in studying this problem. .

The seminar ended successfully, helping students better understand the discrete element method and its applications to solve complex problems in practice.
